How To Clean Old Cast Iron Pans

Poor cleaning techniques can cause a cast iron pan to rust.
You can do it at home ready for regular use with this simple cleaning diy. If needed use a pan scraper for stuck on food. Clean it immediately after using it with coarse salt to remove set in food. After using it simply rinse under hot water and use a plastic scrub pad or scrub brush to remove any stubborn bits of food.
Vinegar will do the trick. You can use a small amount of soap. Thankfully removing rust doesn t require anything as nasty as lye. Immediately after washing dry the pan with a kitchen towel.
Make sure to buy big jugs of cheap distilled white vinegar for this. 3 rinse the cast iron under your faucet. Nick lets his pans soak in the pure distilled white vinegar for six to twelve hours then scrubs it. Using a cloth soaked in vegetable oil rub the entire surface of the pan including the exterior.

Heat upside down in a 350ºf oven for one hour. Rinse it well then dry thoroughly. You should never soak it in water. Unless the pan is very dirty avoid washing it with soap and water.To do so submerge your entire pan in a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and water. Turn off the oven and let the cast iron cool down. But for cast iron with a thick layer of rust you ll need to remove the seasoning entirely. Wash your cast iron cookware by hand.
Allow the pan to soak checking on it frequently to see if the rust has been removed this could take up to eight hours. Place the pan on the stove over low heat for a minute or so to help dry out any remaining moisture. A well seasoned cast iron pot is not difficult to keep clean. To clean old cast iron scrub it with a scrubbing pad and very little dishwashing liquid.
To make sure the pan is completely dry place it on a stove burner turned on low for a few minutes. Once dry pour a small amount of oil in the pan and rub it in with a paper towel until the bottom and sides of the pan are coated.
