The common approach is to fill the crack with spackling then paint over it but this is at best a temporary fix since the crack will usually come back as the seasons change. Let it dry completely. If the tape is intact and well adhered the crack was probably caused by the old drywall compound drying and shrinking. Smooth out a thin layer of joint compound overtop of the strip extending a few inches of compound on each side of the strip. Next put mesh drywall tape over the crack and press it firmly onto the ceiling. To fix a ceiling crack start by scraping away any loose material from the crack with a drywall knife.

Make sure the knife is clean by scraping both sides of it over the edge of the pan.
