How To Fix A Leaky Outside Faucet

To fix a leaky faucet first turn off the water to your faucet by twisting the valve under the sink.

Reattach the spigot turning it carefully to avoid warping or bending it. Outdoor faucets also known as hose bibbs often begin to drip or leak around the handle over time. Shut off the water supply to the fauc. Loosen up that nut and on the inside there s another threaded nut holding the inner housing to the outer.

If there s no valve turn off the water supply for your whole house. The faucet cap may have come loose due to temperature changes or simply from turning the water on and off. Turn the key to loosen it and once you remove it you should see the end has a washer. Repairing or replacing the faulty parts will require a few standard tools. A good pair of channel locks are best for this.

Turn the faucet on to empty any water in the pipes and plug the drain so nothing falls down it while you re working. Place the adjustable wrench on the large valve assembly nut between the packing nut and the spout. The first thing you want to do it locate exactly where the hose bib is leaking from. If the water is coming from around the faucet cap use your adjustable wrench and tighten the cap.

Clamp a monkey wrench around the faucet body where it connects to the side of the house. It may be the washer or it could be the faucet itself. This should stop the water. Screw the handle back onto the faucet once more.
