How To Fix A Dripping Outdoor Faucet

On every outdoor faucet there is usually a large nut just below the turnkey.

Using an adjustable wrench tighten this nut usually by turning clockwise. Replacing washers on both the spigot and valve stem should solve the problem. Keep your eyes open for water drips from the faucet both while water is flowing and when it is shut off. To stop an outdoor faucet or hose bibb from dripping use pliers or an adjustable wrench to slightly tighten the packing nut below the handle of the faucet in a clockwise direction.

A good pair of channel locks are best for this. Screw the handle back onto the faucet once more. Turn the key to loosen it and once you remove it you should see the end has a washer. Restore the water supply to the outdoor faucet and check carefully for leaks.

Remove the screw in the center of the handle and pull the handle off. If the faucet cap is tight and the water is coming from the faucet you will need to replace the washer.
