How To Fix A Broken Door Frame

Open the splits in the door frame and apply wood glue into all of the gaps.

Take care not to damage the stop as you remove it from the frame. Make sure you fill the crack or broken part of the door frame with as much wood putty as possible. The easiest way to fix a broken door frame is remove the metal door catch strike and or dead bolt catch strike. Unscrew the hinge pins from the jamb with a screwdriver then remove them. Holding the door stop firmly against the frame the door was again opened and the stop nailed onto the door frame using finishing nails. Scrape away any small chunks of wood that may be protruding from the door frame. Leave to dry according to the instructions.

Then coat the rotted door frame area with wood hardener as shown. Remove the door from the frame. If your wooden door frame only has cracks a paste for filling the wood may be enough. Place the claw end of the hammer on the side of each nail to support even removal.

So clean the part of your wooden door frame to repair and then coat with wood filler. Carefully lift the door off of the hinges and discard it. To repair rotted door frame first remove rotted wood with a 5 in 1 or other sharp tool. Mix polyester wood filler or bondo wood filler and press it into the recess with a putty knife.

Use a chisel and hammer or putty knife to pry the door stop and molding away from the frame. First use your putty knife to fill wood putty in the broken crack on your door frame. Then sand if necessary to obtain a smooth surface. Once you are sure your door can close move to next step.
