How To Cover A Box With Fabric

One for the outside and one for the inside.

Cover the box lid using the same method. I used two pieces of fabric. This will create flaps that we can use to wrap around the box. Cover the outer box pieces with fabric and batting fold and glue.

Do the same to the opposite side. Tip if you have some fraying fabric rub some fabric glue along the edge. Cut two pieces of fabric one to cover the outside of the box including lid and one to cover the inside. Cover and glue all parts of the outer side of your panels with batting and patterned fabric.

You ll need to trace along both long ends and both short ends of the box so that you ve covered all four sides. Use your fingers to smooth out the fabric. Tuck and adhere to the inside of the box. Center the box on the fabric.

Try not to leave any wrinkles or bubbles in the fabric. Now when you pull up the two sides that are cut to the same width as the box there will be no visible overlap. Measure about two to three inches from the top of the inside. Set it down on the wrong side of the fabric which should be facing up.

Sit the box right in the middle of the fabric take the wider side of fabric and smooth it up the side of the box and wrap the fabric around the box sides. Press it down to help the glue set holding it down for a few seconds then turn it over. Lay your box on the fabric to determine how much you need allow 1 2 inch of overlap all around. Fold the 1 2 inch hems over and press to crease.

Next turn the box up on its side and trace along the outer edges. To measure how much material you need put the box in the center of the material. Then pull the fabric over to the inside. Use scissors to cut a straight line from the edge of the the fabric and into the corner.

Repeat on other long side and then after each side flap is adhered to the short end of the box bring the end flap up and over the box. I have made boxes where i have used batting on all parts of the box but i prefer just the outer panel s and lid take care folding the fabric and gluing. First put the box top down on the fabric and trace it s outline with a fabric disappearing ink marker. Bring on long side of fabric up and wrap excess around the short side of the box.
